Unsilent Night

On December 21st, 2009, Waterloo Graduate students and staff transformed the quiet town of Cambridge into a interactive, winter wonderland of digital installations and art! Here's a look at some of these projects:

PAPER TRACES

Andrea Lacalamita, Matt Peddie, Gillian Tyrrell

Taking inspiration from past uses of various abandoned buildings in Galt's downtown core, graduate students at the UW School of Architecture have transformed empty store windows into stunning winter landscapes constructed of paper - a simple yet exceptionally beautiful material.  Brought to life through a combination of handcrafted and digital fabrication techniques, these window installations contribute not only to the magic of Phil Kline's Unsilent Night, but will remain installed for the winter season, enhancing the urban quality of Galt’s downtown streets.

DARCY'S BOX

Vero Guo

Darcy’s box is a playful narrative of a personal journey into friendship and sorrow through the discovery of spectacular events from a simple object. Geometric shapes, projected from the Musagettes library at the School of Architecture, interact with the brick façade on Main Street that is seen daily by passersby but not often observed. The projections, made using animation from Flash and video footage compiled using Final Cut Pro, will transcend the two-dimensionality of the façade of the CIBC building.

LET IT SNOW!

Victoria Beltrano

Oh the weather inside is frightful,

But the sidewalk’s so delightful

And since we’ve no place to go

Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

Through the projection of a 2 minute looped digital animation, this piece prepared for the Cambridge Unsilent Night event by UW School of Architecture adjunct faculty member Victoria Beltrano temporarily transforms the usually vacant condition of 27 Water Street into an oversized snow globe.
